The Sun (Surya): Your Soul, Your Identity, Your Source of Life

英文的 soul(靈魂)與 solar(太陽的)同源,這並非巧合 —— 太陽就是靈魂之光。

Surya
House

English

This is the first article in a series on the nine Grahas. Graha is Sanskrit for a celestial body — the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), each graha is not merely an object in the sky but a deity.

What does the Sun (Surya) signify in Vedic astrology?

The Sun's Sanskrit name is Surya. In a birth chart it signifies your soul, your ego and sense of identity, and your father.

The English words soul and solar share a root, and that is no accident — the Sun is the light of the soul.

From this follow its other significations: everything elevated and powerful. Kings, fathers, authority figures, status and position, government, prime ministers, capital cities, palaces.

What is the mythology of the Sun across cultures?

Almost every ancient civilisation worshipped a sun god under a different name. The Greeks called him Apollo; in Japan he appears as Dainichi Nyorai.

The Chinese version is particularly elegant. The character 易 in the I Ching is built from 日 (sun) and 月 (moon) — the Sun and Moon sit at the very centre of the text. Without the sun there is no yang; without the moon there is no yin.

Why is the Sun the only source of light?

The Sun is the source of life. Without sunlight the other bodies would not exist, and life on Earth still less: no vitamin D, no photosynthesis, no plants to eat.

In the entire solar system, only the Sun produces light. The Moon, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter — everything you see shining at night is reflecting sunlight.

Traditional images of Surya show seven horses running in different directions. They represent the seven colours white light splits into: the rainbow. Those seven colours correspond to the seven chakras of the body, from the root chakra at the base up to the crown. Seen this way, a human being is itself a rainbow.

How does the Sun show up in your birth chart?

The Sun is exalted in Aries. Aries is the first sign, the moment of birth, where the self is at its most direct — like a newborn who cries when it wants to cry and laughs when it wants to laugh, without calculation. Sunlight radiates in exactly that way.

The Sun is debilitated in Libra. Libra is fairness and balance, and it governs marriage and partnership. To enter a relationship, your ego and your pride must bend, compromise and negotiate. The Sun is not comfortable here.

The Sun owns Leo — its own home. Here it does not need to prove anything, because a lion is already impressive and has no need to perform.

The Sun has its directional strength (digbala) in the 10th house — the position of noon, when the Sun shines directly down on the earth.

Its friends are the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Mercury; its enemies are Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Its element is fire.

Why does Vedic astrology classify the Sun as a malefic?

The Sun gives us life, yet it is classed as a malefic. That seems contradictory, but it is not.

We all age, sicken and die. Past a certain age, no amount of sunlight will keep you alive. What the Sun gives you is a finite life — because it wants you to use this short span in a physical body to discharge certain responsibilities: to repay what you owe.

Across many lifetimes in the cycle of rebirth we have all done some good and some harm — envy, selfishness, greed, deception. Every passing thought can add to the account. The Sun hands you a body so that, while you have one, you can settle as much of it as possible.

So when you see something difficult in your chart, do not be frightened by it. From another angle it is good news: you are repaying. If you cannot become wealthy in this life, perhaps it is because you already did so, repeatedly, in previous ones. If you have an unusual number of enemies, the question is whether you can withstand them — and if you can, a great deal of debt is cleared.

When people see an unflattering chart, their first question is usually "how do I neutralise this?" But many of these passages cannot be avoided. What you can change is your attitude — the same event feels entirely different depending on how you meet it. That is the real purpose of astrology: not evasion, but facing the truth about yourself and adjusting how you carry the difficulty.

Key facts about the Sun

  • Sanskrit name: Surya
  • Signifies: soul, ego, identity, father, authority
  • Element: fire
  • Exalted: Aries
  • Debilitated: Libra
  • Own sign: Leo
  • Directional strength: 10th house
  • Friends: Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury
  • Enemies: Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu
  • Full circuit of the zodiac: about 365 days
  • Time in each sign: about 30 days
  • Retrograde: never (of the nine grahas, only the Sun and Moon do not go retrograde)

For example, if your Sun is in Libra, your birthday falls roughly between mid-October and mid-November — that being the Libra period under Vedic calculation.

How does the sense of self form?

A newborn does not know that a "self" exists. Put a mirror in front of him and he begins to touch it, curious about who is looking back. Gradually the idea of "I" takes shape.

Once there is an "I", there is status — he knows he is the baby of the house, knows which adult can be charmed and which cannot, knows when to behave and when to cry.

And on the day someone sees through that self and wounds his pride, this Sun collapses.

So simply by knowing which sign your Sun occupies, you can see a great deal: what kind of person your father is, what your soul's mission may be, how you identify yourself, and even your relationship with your country, where you live, and those who hold power there.

FAQ

In which sign is the Sun strongest and weakest?

In Vedic astrology the Sun is exalted in Aries, the first sign, where the self expresses itself most directly and forcefully. It is debilitated in Libra, the sign of fairness, partnership and marriage, because a relationship requires the ego and one's pride to compromise. The Sun also owns Leo, its own sign, where it is most at ease.

Why does Vedic astrology classify the Sun as a malefic?

Because the life the Sun grants is finite. It gives us a physical body and also causes us to age and die, so that within that limited span we discharge our responsibilities and repay karmic debt from previous lives. This demanding, limiting quality is why the Sun is classed as a malefic in Vedic astrology, even though it is simultaneously the source of all life.

Does the Sun ever go retrograde?

No. Of the nine grahas in Vedic astrology, only the Sun and the Moon never go retrograde. All the others do — Mercury retrograde being the most commonly discussed. The Sun takes about 365 days to travel through all twelve signs, spending roughly 30 days in each.
