Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. Because of that, seeing Mercury means looking toward the Sun — and for the same reason, a Sun–Mercury conjunction is extremely common in birth charts.
Catching sight of it is not easy. Once the Sun has been up for a few hours the sky is too bright and Mercury's light is drowned out. Only in the dim hour before sunrise, or at dusk, can you find it near the Sun.
What does Mercury (Budha) signify in Vedic astrology?
Mercury's Sanskrit name is Budha. It signifies your intelligence and your capacity to communicate, and it is a notably lively graha.
It signifies the prince — where the Sun is the emperor, Mercury is the young man. It also signifies siblings, and that easy, shoulder-clapping friendliness between them.
In character, Mercury is quick, humorous, talkative, curious, gossipy and sociable. In practical terms it governs trade (merchant and Mercury share a root), marketing, logic, calculation and accounting — from counting change at the market to your household's income and outgoings.
Education belongs to Mercury too. A well-placed Mercury usually means a decent education and good results, particularly in mathematics and the sciences.
Mercury rules Wednesday. The English word comes from Old English Wōdnesdæg, the day of Woden — the Norse Odin, whom the Romans identified with Mercury. Japanese calls it 水曜日, the water day.
Why does Mercury own Virgo and Gemini?
This part is genuinely interesting. Of the twelve signs, only Virgo and Gemini are human.
Most of the rest are animals — the ram, the bull, the lion, the scorpion. Libra is the only inanimate one, being a set of scales. Aquarius sounds human, but the emphasis falls on the vessel and the water.
Virgo is plainly a person; Gemini is Latin for twins, also people. Only humans have minds — only humans reason. So these are the two signs Mercury was given.
Of the two, Mercury performs best in Virgo, where it is exalted.
Why is Mercury weakest in Pisces?
Pisces is an ocean of wisdom, and a deeply contemplative one. Mercury wants logic and calculation — it wants you to confirm that one plus one is two.
But in an ocean of wisdom, one plus one need not equal two. So Mercury is lost in Pisces: what is this place, and what are you talking about? Hence its debilitation.
This does not mean Mercury in Pisces makes you slow. Mercury's reasoning is genuinely powerful; it simply needs far longer, teasing the threads apart in that vast sea. It spends much more effort than most — but it does eventually arrive at an answer.
Where does Mercury's restlessness come from?
Every graha has a difficult side. Mercury's is that it cannot settle.
It wants to try everything and befriend everyone. Guitar today, piano tomorrow, dancing the day after. Badly placed, Mercury may sample everything and master nothing, because it never goes deep into any one thing.
That restlessness comes from its parentage. Mercury is the Moon's illegitimate son: the Moon carried off Jupiter's wife Tara and fathered Mercury. So Mercury carries the Moon's DNA — something of its thieving and indulgent streak, and the Moon's waxing and waning becomes, in Mercury, a wavering of the mind.
It also explains something else: Mercury and Jupiter are not friendly. Jupiter's wife was taken, and the resulting child was never going to be welcome.
Jupiter, by contrast, is the sage who studies one thing deeply, and is therefore conservative. Mercury has no such patience — it will not sit down and work through scripture with you.
How does Mercury weigh things up?
Mercury has a wife named Ila, who in the mythology was cursed to spend fifteen days as a woman and fifteen as a man.
The story points to how widely Mercury can accept what it encounters — it will try anything. And its way of assessing a matter is very direct: is there a benefit in this for me? It weighs morality lightly and is not much swayed by emotion — unlike Jupiter with its doctrines and ethics, or the Moon with its moods. It simply wants to try, then calculates whether the sums come out in its favour.

Among the chakras, Mercury corresponds to the throat chakra. What a well-used Mercury should do is therefore quite clear: tell the truth, avoid false speech, and do not pass on what is wrong. Look before you speak; think before you talk.
