Jupiter (Guru): Wisdom, the Husband, and the Master Who Lost His Temper

木星的方向力量第一個 House(Lagna)最強。

(Marpa)

English

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It produces no light of its own, and it is in fact an enormous ball of gas — the beautiful grain you see on its surface is weather, wind in motion.

Between Jupiter and Mars lies the asteroid belt. Were Jupiter not so massive, and were it not drawing that debris away, much of it would likely be pulled into the inner solar system and strike the rocky planets. In astrological terms, Jupiter is therefore protective by its very nature.

What does Jupiter (Guru) signify in Vedic astrology?

Jupiter's Sanskrit name is Guru, also Brihaspati. It is the great benefic, and it signifies wisdom.

Among people it signifies sages, superiors, teachers, priests, monks and the nobility — anyone holding knowledge ordinary people do not. It also signifies the general: the one who understands strategy and directs Mars's soldiers into battle. Before any great decision, emperors would consult monks, priests or generals.

In your own chart, Jupiter signifies your husband and your children. Well placed, it suggests a husband of wisdom and means.

Jupiter signifies everything large, being itself an enormous gas planet — a large or rounded physique, and even economic bubbles. Rich, expanding foods fall under it too.

Then there is magnanimity. Are you small-minded? If so, Jupiter may not be well placed. Jupiter people are broad-minded — though their tempers tend to be equally large, which we will come to.

One more thing matters: qi, the vital energy. Anyone who practises yoga, qigong or tai chi knows the body carries it. The Sun grants the soul; Jupiter grants this field of energy, which sustains you as you walk the earth until the day you leave it.

Jupiter rules Thursday. The English word comes from Old English þunresdæg; the Norse called the god Tordon, the Romans Jupiter. Japanese names it 木曜日.

How does Jupiter show up in your birth chart?

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. It is a sage, and Cancer is family, the warm household — the place where it can take up the role of the wise one, teaching you how to live and what is right. In a religious household there may be chanting or meditation together. Jupiter does its best work here.

Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn. Capricorn is power and government, worldly ascent. Jupiter does not chase worldly things — it moves toward religion and liberation, and has no interest in an environment built on climbing.

Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces. Sagittarius signifies religion, temples, churches, morality and law; Pisces has already passed beyond worldly wisdom into great love and compassion, an ocean of understanding. Sagittarius is its Mooltrikona sign.

Jupiter has its directional strength in the 1st house, the Lagna. With Jupiter there, your life tends to be well protected and frequently helped by benefactors — even after an accident, you may feel something unseen was looking after you.

Jupiter's enemies are Mercury and Venus.

Why doesn't Jupiter teach everyone?

Jupiter may be the sage, but it also rather enjoys showing off — displaying its wisdom and its standing.

Yet it does not teach everyone. It chooses. It will not approach you and offer to instruct you; it keeps its knowledge back. You must ask, and there must be some affinity between you, before Jupiter gives anything at all.

Milarepa and Marpa: Jupiter's temper

How large that temper can be is best shown by a story from the Vajrayana tradition.

Before he became a saint, the great adept Milarepa did terrible things. His father died young; the family had been wealthy, but relatives seized the property and abused him, his sister and his mother for years.

In his fury Milarepa went to learn sorcery — what we would now call black magic. He was extraordinarily gifted and learned quickly, and he called down storms and hail that destroyed his relatives' houses and wealth and killed a number of them. Having taken his revenge, he was at first glad of it.

After a time, fear set in. Anyone who has studied such things knows there is cause and effect in this world — do something like that, and will there be nothing to repay? The more he thought, the more afraid he became. He hurried to find another master and said: I know I was wrong. I must attain realisation in this very life, or I fear I will truly fall into hell.

The master he found was Marpa, whose temper was already legendary.

Marpa said: first, build me a stone house. So Milarepa hauled stones and built. When it was nearly done, Marpa said: not like that — tear it down and start again. Milarepa said yes, tore it down, and carried the stones back. When it was built again, Marpa said: I did not want it here, I want it over there.

This went on, again and again. Milarepa's shoulders were raw, his body covered in injuries. Even Marpa's wife protested that this was too much and would kill him. Marpa ignored her, raged as before, and went on telling him everything he had done wrong.

Years later, Milarepa finally broke: if you never intended to teach me, then do not teach me. I am finished.

Only then did Marpa tell him the truth: your karma was too heavy. Without doing all of this, you could never have repaid the enormity of what you did.

Milarepa repented in earnest then, and truly understood. Marpa at last transmitted the practices to him — and Milarepa attained realisation.

What if your husband is Marpa?

The story shows how hard Jupiter's temper is to read.

So yes, a well-placed Jupiter may bring a good husband — but do not celebrate too early, because it may also bring one rather like Marpa. He may expect you to chant, to meditate, to practise yoga, and he may be extremely demanding.

If so, understand this: if he is genuinely a Jupiter-type sage, he is pressing you — he wants you on the path toward liberation. And very likely he is doing it unconsciously, with no idea himself, simply exercising the energy Jupiter gave him.

So when he is severe and you are unhappy about it, it is worth asking whether what he says is actually wrong. It may well be right. Once you understand your own chart, you begin to understand the people around you too — why one treats you especially well and another especially badly, and what is driving it underneath.

Jupiter and law

Everything in the universe is ultimately mathematics, a pattern — and geometry behaves very much like law, fixed and settled. The angles of a triangle always sum to 180 degrees; a quadrilateral to 360. Why? There is no explaining it. The law was set long ago.

The Tang dynasty monk Jianzhen is a good illustration. Temples had been built at Nara in Japan, but they were overwhelmed by the destitute, by beggars and even by criminals, and could not be governed. Envoys were sent all the way to Tang China to request an eminent monk who could establish rules.

Jianzhen's crossings failed repeatedly; by the time he reached Japan he was old and had lost his sight. What he established at Nara was the Vinaya school — the school of monastic law. Masters, sages and law alike all belong to Jupiter.

FAQ

What does Jupiter signify in Vedic astrology?

Jupiter (Sanskrit Guru, also Brihaspati) is the great benefic, signifying wisdom, protection and wealth. Among people it signifies sages, teachers, monks, generals and the nobility; in your own chart it signifies your husband and your children. It also governs the body's vital energy — where the Sun grants the soul, Jupiter grants the field of energy that sustains a life.

In which sign is Jupiter strongest and weakest?

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, the sign of family and the warm household, where a sage can teach and nurture. It is debilitated in Capricorn, which signifies worldly power and ascent, whereas Jupiter seeks religion and liberation. Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces, and has its directional strength in the 1st house, the Lagna.

Why is Jupiter said to have a great temper?

Because Jupiter's severity is often aimed at liberation. In the Vajrayana story, Milarepa killed his relatives through sorcery, then sought teachings from the master Marpa — who made him build and demolish a stone house over and over for years, berating him throughout, until Milarepa nearly gave up. Only then did Marpa reveal the reason: without that ordeal, the karma could not have been repaid. A well-placed Jupiter may bring a wise husband, but it may also bring an extremely demanding one.
